Update: Elliottback has some more screenshots. Check em out. Too lazy to upload.

Windows Vista Build 5231 has been leaked somewhere on the net, or IRC, but I don’t have the link yet, and still digging for it. But, I got some changes that are in this build:

  • System properties has a new look.
  • Sound studdering problem apprently gone
  • Native 6800 LDDM drivers
  • DWM effects runs real smooth.
  • IE 7 has a new look
  • - Windows Media Player 11 shows up
  • The much talked about customized settings for sound in vista

We’ll keep you updated, and links will be posted as soon as they are leaked.

  2. It’s good to see that they have moved the tabbed browsing tabs to a far more logical place than in the earlier IE shots I have seen.

  5. In the third image…minimized to the taskbar, whats the first window that says “Ryan I Topside Porn”? Is porn going to be a new feature in Vista?

I’m somewhat in agreement with John…the DRM crap sucks. Windows will detect if your monitor supports DRM and will not display certain videos if it doesn’t? What is up with that? Stay out of my life, Windows! All I want is an operating system, not a prison guard.

Wrong. As usual, people attack the wrong point. Microsoft _supports_ DRM. The venders want it, and so Microsoft supports it. They’re not forcing you to not view DRM videos, the venders are. Microsoft has two choices: not support it, and make it so nobody using their OS can use them, or support it and allow people with proper rights to see it. Either way, you’re problem is with the sods using DRM on their media.

Bunk. The nice ting about being a monopoly is that they could tell the RIAA/MPAA DRM pushers to stuff it. There’s no way these two orginzations would force MS to do anything by not playing along, because they’de be shooting themselfs in the foot in terms of marketshare.

I knew I’d see that one. So they’re just supposed to “take a stand” and be labelled as people who are against security? They’re just supposed to ignore a potential market for secure media? That’d be along the lines of not supporting USB. Businesses are going to take advantage of DRM, and people are going to benefit from it (cheaper prices). People are also going to be screwed by it, because DRM typically gives businesses too much control–we all know that. But that’s a seperate issue.

Lastly, the RIAA and MPAA are hardly the only ones pushing for DRM. How about a business that only wants its employees to see it’s videos? How about a company trying to prevent people from stealing its work before the media is released? The sad fact of life is that people are screwing companies over, and they have to take measures to prevent that. Heck, we might even be able to rent PC games with DRM. I don’t want to slap down $50-60 for a game I’ll beat in a week.

  15. DRM is teh devil, sure, but vista does look fairly slick. I’m sure there’ll be enough hacked drivers and vista distros that neuter the DRM functions, so fear not matey! Arrggg!

First, I think you have the whole idea of security wrong. Security is not having to worry about someone hacking into your computer - be it Microsoft, or bubba over across the street. DRM puts a serious hole in Windows - the ability for Microsoft to Remote Attensate your computer. (Remote Attensation is a MS term for Backdoor / Remote Control your computer, similar to OptixPro or any other Trojan Horse).

I don’t feel comfortable giving Microsoft the ability to take over my computer whenever they feel like it. Imagine the possibilities if a hacker cracks the code that RA uses? They could gain control over your computer in a single click, steal your credit card information, steal your passwords, identity, surfing habits, etc…

Why not? They’re taking a stand against that state of MA over the idea that people should’t own their documents, but should be owned by a document format. Of course, the key factor in BOTH situations is that their stand promotes their monopoly.
